New house updates: a warm, Bohemian guest bedroom
I sort of hate when people make personal declarations like this, but in my circles, I am rather well known for *forcing* people to sleepover. I actually hate when people leave our house, and I am not shy about trying to coerce my family and friends to stay longer. I hate leaving other people’s houses just as much. Don’t get me wrong, I do leave—I’m not that person, but I’d be fine being that person, if the offer were there. The same goes for vacations and trips away from home; no one has to ask me twice to stay an extra night or give up my seat on the plane to have another night in a hotel. I don’t know what it is, but the idea of a sleepover, whether at my own house or elsewhere, is still as special to me as it was when I was 10. Or when I was 17 and my friend Emmy and I would literally beg our parents every night to let us have a school-night sleepover. Looking back, that’s what dads are for. Like most things, my dad was always down. Anyway, sleepovers are just as fun now as they were then—maybe even more fun. There’s no more pressure to stay up when I’m tired (wasn’t that the worst?), no more fear of falling asleep during the movie (I still do this, but without fear), no more rules, no more parents.
I’ve looked forward to having a guest room for as long as I’ve had guests who instead have had to sleep on the couch, on the floor, or on an air mattress that Kaya put a hole in the very first time we blew it up (so, the floor).
When we bought our house, I immediately couldn’t wait to make a warm, inviting guest room (or two!). It’s sort of funny because our guests are not people who particularly care whether they’re in a warm, inviting guest room or on the couch in the living room, but hey—I’m thrilled to be able to offer them a cozy night or weekend’s stay in their own space. I thought about all of the things that make a guest room warm, inviting, comfortable, and suitable, and I did my best to incorporate all of it in this room, right down to the cutest individually wrapped toothbrushes from MUJI, the land of alllllll things smart, sleek, clean, and cool (if you find yourself bored at JFK Airport, FIND THIS STORE).
It’s still not completely finished (note: when you buy a fixer upper house, nothing is ever really, really finished), but it’s done enough for now. I’m still in the market for window treatments, a ceiling light fixture, a couple of hooks, and most importantly, bathrobes! How cute is it to have a couple large bathrobes for people to use, like in a hotel? I’m thinking about these ones.
On that note, I’ve also been working on a post about how to create a warm and inviting guest room. As life tends to go, our actual guest room came together quicker than that post, so I’m switching up the order and showing you ours first. But be on the lookout for my detailed post of little ways to step up your guest room game.
